My thesis is situated in the critical field of political violence and aims to capture epistemic logics surrounding anthroponymy (the study of first and last names) and the institutional and state justifications that impose anthroponymic norms, legitimize them, and undermine the intelligibility of other frameworks. I reflect on the phenomenon of changing personal (pre)names in light of colonial, racial, and gendered relations of power and domination.
