My aim is to highlight the writings of women philosophers in order to provide a more authentic understanding of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy, giving visibility to important figures from this period too often marginalized or neglected in the current canon. More concretely, my thesis will focus on friendship, a classic theme much discussed since Antiquity, and of interest to many female authors in the modern era, notably in their reflections on the conditions of female emancipation and access to happiness for women. My aim is to demonstrate the relevance of these authors and this theme both historically and to our contemporary thinking in philosophy, social epistemology and feminist studies.
